Programs

English as a Second Language (ESL):

English as a Second Language (ESL) programs are for students who are either new to the country or are Canadian-born, whose first language is other than English or is a variety of English that is significantly different from the English used in Ontario schools. These students are proficient users of their first language, but have limited facility in English.

English Literacy Development (ELD):

English Literacy Development (ELD) programs are for newcomers whose first language is other than English or is a variety of English that is significantly different from the English used in Ontario schools. These students have had limited opportunities to develop literacy skills due to interrupted schooling or a lack of access to education. These students have significant gaps in their education and have had limited opportunities to develop literacy skills in any language.

Ajax High School offers credit courses in five levels of ESL and five levels of ELD.  Three of these courses can replace compulsory English credit courses, but students must also take a mainstream English credit course at the grade 12 level.  Extra ESL or ELD courses count as optional or elective credits.
